On Saturday 19th November 2022, the Sydney Markets Foundation’s 41st Annual Cherry Auction was held at Doltone House, and Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary. Here Dr Richard Mitchell, Director of the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, gave a compelling speech about the immense impact clinical trials can have on kids with cancer and their families.
The Kids Cancer Centre is a leading international centre of excellence in the treatment and research of childhood cancer and blood disorders. It has been delivering family-focused care for children and adolescents with cancer for the past 50 years.
Having a wealth of experience in the area, Dr Mitchell spoke to the exceptional advances in cancer treatment over the years but shared the staggering statistics sighting nearly 1,000 kids and adolescents in Australia are still diagnosed with cancer every year. And every week, three children die from the disease.
Dr Mitchell believes it’s an exciting time to be in the field of medicine.
“We are approaching a new frontier in childhood cancer treatments, new discoveries and breakthroughs are happening every day, but we still need your help,” explained Dr Mitchell.
This very speech inspired Robert Lo of Pro Bros Providore to bid an astonishing $60,000 for the first box of Biteriot! Cherries of the season which crowned him the 2022 Cherry King!
Thanks to an additional $20,000 from Sydney Markets Credit Services, the grand total raised was $80,000, which will go toward clinical trials across Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, giving hope to kids and their families impacted by cancer.
By supporting these clinical trials, we are helping clinicians and researchers unlock a new era in childhood cancer survival, giving families hope where they previously had none and ultimately improving patient outcomes for kids now and in the future.
Every bit of support helps us get closer to a world where every child is free of cancer. A world where kids can just be kids. Thank you Sydney Markets Foundation for your support.
