When Josie Dincel started attending the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 2015 with her own child, she began to take more notice of the little things. Are there colouring books available to keep her other children occupied while she speaks with doctors? Do they have music to listen to or games to play?
To fill the gaps, Josie started Ward Angels – a program where she works closely with the SCHF Volunteer team and her own community of volunteers to provide the small things that make a big difference to the lives of parents and their sick children.
This year, Josie and her Ward Angels raised over $130,000 to provide entertainment, sensory toys, therapy equipment, baby monitors and mats, socks and bereavement boxes across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. On top of all this, they also donated Mother’s Day gifts for every mum, and Easter gifts for every child at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, and Bear Cottage.
It's no surprise that Josie was named the 2021 NSW Volunteer of the Year by the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA) for her compassion, tireless efforts, and steadfast dedication.
