SCHN Paediatric Palliative Care Gathering Hands Program

By SCHN Palliative Care

Welcome to our Gathering Hands Program-Fundraising for Palliative Care for Children

“Gathering Hands Program” aims to bring comfort, joy and hope to children and their families.  The name Gathering Hands was suggested by one of our lovely, bereaved parents Jo, whose son Marcus was cared for by our Palliative Care Team. Jo described how it was often the little things that made a difference during the most difficult times.
This inspired us to create our Gathering Hands Program. We want to encourage people to come together to raise funds that would enable us to provide little acts of kindness to children and families receiving palliative care.

During one of the Gathering Hands fundraisers, Jo and a team of school parents handmade corsages for a year 12 formal. While creating these corsages, Jo expressed the idea behind Gathering Hands beautifully:

"During the illness journey, families can feel depleted and overwhelmed- trying to manage life's necessary, but mundane activities.

We gathered to create beautiful corsages, but we also created a connection through our shared stories, laughs and tears. Most importantly, we have raised funds for these families, so that they may have time to 'smell the roses'."

How your funds can provide small acts of kindness, bringing comfort and hope to a sick child and their family:

- Meal delivery to families at home
- Providing home like comforts during hospital admissions and end of life (e.g. soft lighting, diffusers)
- Coffee vouchers for parents during admissions to hospital
- Home cleaning or garden maintenance
- Fun family outings (e.g. movies)
- Icecream or bakery vouchers
-Home tutoring for children in a family

Some bigger projects include the creation of a child's biography (The Story Project)
