What is the Wilbury Initiative?
Wilbury the bear, purchased by entrepreneur John Roca at a Sydney Children's Hospital charity auction, is more than a plush toy—he's a symbol of generosity. Named Wilbury to evoke adventure and whimsy, the bear serves as a traveling ambassador for charity. John's innovative idea involves individuals adopting Wilbury for a week in exchange for a $500 donation to the hospital, creating a unique way to raise funds and spread goodwill.
The rules were simple: Wilbury would travel from one kind-hearted person to another, each adopter ensuring the hospital received a generous donation while also continuing the bear's charitable journey.
Wilbury's journey inspires hope and kindness as people adopt him, raising funds for the Sydney Children's Hospital. With an online tracker and social media updates, his travels spread goodwill and engage communities. The mission concludes in December 2025, as Wilbury reunites with John Roca to present the total donations, symbolising the impact of generosity and community spirit.
Together, they will hand over the cheques to the hospital, marking the culmination of their charitable adventure. The event will not only be a celebration of the funds raised but also a symbol of the power of community, kindness, and the enduring impact of one bear’s journey to make a difference. It would be a fitting end to Wilbury’s mission, but also the beginning of something even bigger: a legacy of charitable giving that would inspire future generations to think creatively and act selflessly.
