Donations for the Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care

By Sonia Gill

I’ve chosen to raise much needed funds for Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation

In a few days time it will be Ashveer’s first Christmas and Karinvir & I would like to ask our family and friends for a really special gift this year - that everyone put aside a few dollars to donate to the Grace Centre for Newborn Care at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Earlier this year we learned firsthand the amazing work being done at the Grace Centre. Our son, Ashveer, was born with a rare congenital heart defect called Transposition of the Great Arteries which meant that oxygenated blood from the lungs was not being sent to the rest of the body. He required life-saving surgery when he was just 4 days old, and we spent just over 5 weeks at Westmead Children’s Hospital, the majority of which was at the Grace Centre.  He was surrounded by many other newborns who required around-the-clock care, with the majority of babies in Grace each having a dedicated nurse to monitor them given the severity of their conditions.

We are so fortunate to live in Australia and have access to one of the best public health systems in the world. Unfortunately, this does not mean that our hospital system always has access to the latest technology. So what are we trying to raise money for?

The Grace Centre is in urgent need of 3 new state-of-the-art V800 Ventilators that provide vital oxygen support to newborns when they are at their most vulnerable. Over 600 babies a year pass through the Grace Centre, so this donation will help many babies and families over the coming years.
