Hi, I’m Kelcie Bryant-Duguid, a visual artist, educator and mum.

My art practice is multi-disciplinary. I paint and draw and make sculptures, collages and prints. I also work with textiles and unusual materials to make wearable art. I have always loved creating with my hands. I use colour and naïve imagery to express emotions and tell stories. My work often explores themes of place and home and frequently features trees, plants, birds and animals.

I grew up on a farm with a stone fruit orchard in rural NSW in a little village called Kootingal. Climbing trees and picking fruit on hot summer days are memories I hold dear. These naïve works are inspired by my childhood. They are influenced by the painting styles of Matisse, Rousseau (The Sleeping Gypsy and jungle paintings), and Michael Leunig (Australian cartoonist, printmaker and poet).

The paintings in this series are a joy to create. They are playful, fun, colourful, fanciful and energetic. Starting with random marks on the canvas, the trees and animals slowly reveal themselves and their whimsical personalities. My intention in creating these works is to activate and engage the imaginations of children and adults alike. To bring a smile to your face and invite you to a faraway magical place you can journey to and create your own stories, transporting your imagination via nature, friendly creatures and colourful whimsy.
