The inspiring life of Bourke

Bourke Gibbons

Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) has been fortunate to have many inspiring and dedicated fundraisers, but one individual who touched the hearts of many was Bourke Gibbons.

Bourke was born with cerebral palsy and faced numerous struggles throughout his life, however, his commitment to helping others never wavered. He became a familiar and beloved figure in Manly, where he sold pens every day outside St Matthew’s Church (no matter the weather) to raise funds for charities, including The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Bear Cottage in Manly, raising tens of thousands of dollars.

Bourke’s perseverance and positive attitude saw him through many endeavours, including his participation in the Paralympics in Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992, where he represented Australia in Bocce. Though he wasn’t expected to survive adulthood, Bourke’s indomitable spirit inspired all who knew him. His commitment to fundraising was recognised when he was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) for Charitable Fundraising in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2000.

Those who worked with Bourke remember him with great affection and admiration. Though he has passed, his spirit lives on in the SCHF community and in the hearts of all those he helped over the years. Bourke was a true inspiration, and his legacy of giving back to those in need continues to inspire us all.

“People like Bourke you don’t often hear about anymore. He had his own struggles, yet he would go above and beyond to give back.” Katrina, Donor Engagement Lead, SCHF.

He was simply a joy to know, and his can-do attitude saw him have many wonderful experiences in his life with everything seemingly against him. He’s been through so much and always had a smile on his face. I admired him and all he has done to fundraise for sick kids. He’s simply inspiring.” Alicia, Relationship Manager, SCHF.

“Bourke may no longer be here to continue his fundraising, but his spirit lives on in SCHF folk lore, and in the hearts of those he helped over the years in his own special way. A man who simply towered above his own obstacles to help others.” Anne, Head of Planned Giving, SCHF.
